“Warner Bros. announced today at CinemaCon that it has not only acquired the sci-fi thriller but has also fast-tracked it, with plans to release it in theaters on August 11, 2028

…Dread learned it’s very Alien-esque, following a deep-space captain who leads her crew to investigate a cryptic signal from a distant world, only to uncover an alien artifact that warps time, reality, and their sanity, forcing them into a confrontation with an incomprehensible intelligence.” – Article on Dread Central

Show Transcript

00:00:11.000 –> 00:00:13.820
Welcome back to nightmare logic the podcast where

00:00:13.820 –> 00:00:16.420
we only take breaks for funerals I’m your host

00:00:16.420 –> 00:00:19.219
Christopher Smith off today are Peter Sawyer

00:00:19.219 –> 00:00:22.000
and Taffeta darling And I’m here just to give

00:00:22.000 –> 00:00:25.039
you a quick update along with some news and releases

00:00:25.039 –> 00:00:32.340
Welcome as you might have guessed from the intro.

00:00:32.700 –> 00:00:35.600
I’m alone this week in the studio both Peter

00:00:35.600 –> 00:00:38.509
and Taffeta I would like to be here, but unfortunately

00:00:38.509 –> 00:00:41.049
I have been out of town for a memorial service

00:00:41.049 –> 00:00:43.149
for my mother -in -law. So we weren’t able to

00:00:43.149 –> 00:00:45.429
get together today and record something with

00:00:45.429 –> 00:00:48.450
the three of us. But given that we’ve had a lot

00:00:48.450 –> 00:00:51.070
of growth on the pod this week and last week,

00:00:51.170 –> 00:00:53.090
I thought I would record a short episode anyways,

00:00:53.329 –> 00:00:55.369
just so people understand that we are a weekly

00:00:55.369 –> 00:00:57.630
podcast. So today is going to be a little different

00:00:57.630 –> 00:00:59.630
than our normal podcasts. Normally we’d have

00:00:59.630 –> 00:01:01.909
a longer discussion about some kind of topic

00:01:01.909 –> 00:01:05.519
like. twist endings or we might have an interview

00:01:05.519 –> 00:01:09.180
with a creator of some type, either a writer

00:01:09.180 –> 00:01:12.560
or a comic book artist or perhaps a sound designer

00:01:12.560 –> 00:01:15.040
like we had last week with Elliot Thompson. But

00:01:15.040 –> 00:01:16.959
this week I’m just going to stick with the opening

00:01:16.959 –> 00:01:19.620
segments that we have, news and coming releases.

00:01:20.099 –> 00:01:22.659
So let’s get started with the news. Perhaps the

00:01:22.659 –> 00:01:24.739
biggest headline from this week is we are getting

00:01:24.739 –> 00:01:28.099
a new long legs film. And not just that, it will

00:01:28.099 –> 00:01:31.540
be directed by Osgood and Perkins and star Nicolas

00:01:31.540 –> 00:01:35.069
Cage. What’s interesting is this time it’s not

00:01:35.069 –> 00:01:38.150
at NEON but for Paramount because apparently

00:01:38.150 –> 00:01:41.549
the concept came in at a higher budget and kind

00:01:41.549 –> 00:01:44.849
of a bigger scale than what NEON has set for

00:01:44.849 –> 00:01:47.650
themselves as a limit. For those who aren’t aware,

00:01:47.890 –> 00:01:50.750
Long Legs earned 128 million worldwide at the

00:01:50.750 –> 00:01:53.530
box office, but on a budget of less than 10 million

00:01:53.530 –> 00:01:56.250
dollars, which also kind of launched Osgood Perkins

00:01:56.250 –> 00:01:58.409
into the stratosphere. We’ve got a lot of high

00:01:58.409 –> 00:02:00.489
hopes for the new Long Legs film and can’t wait

00:02:00.489 –> 00:02:03.230
to check it out. For more news along those lines,

00:02:03.510 –> 00:02:05.469
we learned this week that the weapons prequel,

00:02:05.590 –> 00:02:09.669
Gladys, is set to release in 2028. What’s interesting,

00:02:09.969 –> 00:02:12.610
and perhaps disappointing to some, is that Zach

00:02:12.610 –> 00:02:14.969
Kreger, friend of the pod, will not be directing,

00:02:15.069 –> 00:02:17.469
but will co -write it. Which is a bit of a bummer,

00:02:17.490 –> 00:02:19.169
I’d love to see him do more work in that world,

00:02:19.210 –> 00:02:21.069
but he has got his hands full with a ton of other

00:02:21.069 –> 00:02:23.870
projects, and I bet he has a bunch more cooking

00:02:23.870 –> 00:02:26.090
in his brain, so can’t wait to see what he comes

00:02:26.090 –> 00:02:29.520
up with next after Resident Evil. Speaking of

00:02:29.520 –> 00:02:31.500
which, that brings us to the next bit of Zach

00:02:31.500 –> 00:02:34.080
Craigor news. His next film, The Flood, is set

00:02:34.080 –> 00:02:38.039
to be released in August 2028. So it’s going

00:02:38.039 –> 00:02:40.780
to be a big year for Zach. The Flood is a sci

00:02:40.780 –> 00:02:42.919
-fi thriller set on a distant space station.

00:02:43.680 –> 00:02:46.479
And the last I heard about this project, apparently

00:02:46.479 –> 00:02:49.219
there’s a big disagreement between Craigor and

00:02:49.219 –> 00:02:52.460
Netflix regarding Netflix has promised to release

00:02:52.460 –> 00:02:55.020
it in theaters when they sold it to them. My

00:02:55.020 –> 00:02:56.759
understanding is that they decided that they

00:02:56.759 –> 00:02:58.620
didn’t want to release it in theaters and Zach

00:02:58.620 –> 00:03:02.099
was pushing back, which is great, I think. And

00:03:02.099 –> 00:03:05.800
now it seems to have landed at Warner Brothers.

00:03:06.259 –> 00:03:08.800
So my guess is that they resolved it by releasing

00:03:08.800 –> 00:03:11.819
the film to sell it to Warner Brothers. So I’m

00:03:11.819 –> 00:03:14.439
curious to hear the backstory to that. It is

00:03:14.439 –> 00:03:16.280
a bit of a shame that we have to wait even longer

00:03:16.280 –> 00:03:18.259
now to see it, but at least it’s going to come

00:03:18.259 –> 00:03:20.419
out and in theaters. I think it’s going to be

00:03:20.419 –> 00:03:23.520
great. So check it out in August 2028. For the

00:03:23.520 –> 00:03:26.240
next topic, after a bidding war, Searchlight

00:03:26.240 –> 00:03:28.680
Pictures has acquired a South by Southwest hit

00:03:28.680 –> 00:03:31.659
monitor for a large sum of cash. So the premise

00:03:31.659 –> 00:03:34.500
of monitor is that after a disturbing video surfaces

00:03:34.500 –> 00:03:37.300
online, something begins to spread, moving from

00:03:37.300 –> 00:03:39.560
screen to screen, targeting everyone who watches.

00:03:39.919 –> 00:03:42.539
There’s no escape, no warning. Once you’ve seen

00:03:42.539 –> 00:03:45.759
it, it’s already too late. Sounds great. It’s

00:03:45.759 –> 00:03:48.939
actually based on a short film that the writer

00:03:48.939 –> 00:03:52.340
-director released back in the day that got a

00:03:52.340 –> 00:03:55.020
lot of buzz and critical reception, also called

00:03:55.020 –> 00:03:58.240
Monitor. And we will put that on this week’s

00:03:58.240 –> 00:04:00.919
show notes for you to check out. Last but not

00:04:00.919 –> 00:04:02.919
least, we’re getting an interactive slasher film

00:04:02.919 –> 00:04:06.599
in 2027. The film’s called Slayday. And as an

00:04:06.599 –> 00:04:08.960
article on Dread Central describes it, Slayday

00:04:08.960 –> 00:04:11.439
is an interactive slasher film that puts audiences

00:04:11.439 –> 00:04:14.139
in control of who lives and dies and is heading

00:04:14.139 –> 00:04:18.300
to a wide theatrical release in 2027. So about

00:04:18.300 –> 00:04:20.360
a thousand screens, from my understanding. In

00:04:20.360 –> 00:04:23.139
the film, audiences are posed a challenge. Can

00:04:23.139 –> 00:04:25.259
you survive a high school dance when it turns

00:04:25.259 –> 00:04:28.420
deadly? Set on Friday the 13th, 1987, in the

00:04:28.420 –> 00:04:30.660
picture -perfect town of Belle Falls, the story

00:04:30.660 –> 00:04:32.740
follows six teens preparing for their biggest

00:04:32.740 –> 00:04:36.100
night of the year, the Sadie Hawkins dance. But

00:04:36.100 –> 00:04:38.199
when the town exhumes the body of the real Sadie

00:04:38.199 –> 00:04:40.259
Hawkins to unravel the truth behind her killing

00:04:40.259 –> 00:04:43.399
spree 50 years earlier, a malevolent force returns

00:04:43.399 –> 00:04:47.220
to the town. Interactive film. Like maybe this

00:04:47.220 –> 00:04:49.160
is the future of cinema. Maybe it’s a gimmick.

00:04:49.220 –> 00:04:51.399
Maybe it works this one time or occasionally.

00:04:51.540 –> 00:04:54.420
I’m not sure, but I imagine there must be some

00:04:54.420 –> 00:04:57.860
kind of voting process for the audience, like

00:04:57.860 –> 00:05:01.300
something with your phone where you, you know,

00:05:01.420 –> 00:05:04.110
choose what happens next. So I’m curious to see

00:05:04.110 –> 00:05:06.389
how that flows, how the storytelling works, you

00:05:06.389 –> 00:05:09.310
know, as a filmmaker. And yeah, I’m just interested

00:05:09.310 –> 00:05:12.550
to check it out all around. Okay, moving on to

00:05:12.550 –> 00:05:14.970
our next segment. We’re going to be talking about

00:05:14.970 –> 00:05:18.389
what’s coming this week, April 17th, which in

00:05:18.389 –> 00:05:20.689
the land of horror and genre is not a whole lot

00:05:20.689 –> 00:05:23.189
really. But there is one big release coming this

00:05:23.189 –> 00:05:26.189
week, and that is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy for

00:05:26.189 –> 00:05:29.009
Blumhouse and James Wan. The Mummy is written

00:05:29.009 –> 00:05:32.310
and directed by Lee Cronin. of Evil Dead Rise

00:05:32.310 –> 00:05:35.649
fame, and apparently this film is a little bit

00:05:35.649 –> 00:05:38.089
more of a follow -up to Evil Dead Rise than a

00:05:38.089 –> 00:05:40.350
standalone Mummy or in some other Mummy -verse.

00:05:40.970 –> 00:05:44.370
It stars Jack Reiner, Lea Costa, and Mae Kalamuai.

00:05:44.850 –> 00:05:47.509
Here’s a short synopsis. The young daughter of

00:05:47.509 –> 00:05:49.550
a journalist disappears into the desert without

00:05:49.550 –> 00:05:51.910
a trace. Eight years later, the broken family

00:05:51.910 –> 00:05:54.069
is shocked when she is returned to them, as what

00:05:54.069 –> 00:05:56.290
should be a joyful reunion turns into a living

00:05:56.290 –> 00:05:59.379
nightmare. Sounds really interesting. We will

00:05:59.379 –> 00:06:02.980
have links to the trailer and the IMDB page on

00:06:02.980 –> 00:06:05.720
our show notes for today. Lastly, I wanted to

00:06:05.720 –> 00:06:08.060
mention an indie film, which actually came out

00:06:08.060 –> 00:06:11.740
on the 15th. It is called Citywide Fever, and

00:06:11.740 –> 00:06:13.680
it’s a thriller which is written and directed

00:06:13.680 –> 00:06:18.319
by Josh Heaps. It stars Ritanya Alda, Hugo Alexander

00:06:18.319 –> 00:06:22.019
-Rose, and Michael M. Belandic. A film student

00:06:22.019 –> 00:06:25.350
named Sam uncovers a hard drive chronicling forgotten

00:06:25.350 –> 00:06:29.670
Giallo director Saturnini Barisi’s life. Investigating

00:06:29.670 –> 00:06:31.949
his disappearance, she’s drawn into a violent

00:06:31.949 –> 00:06:34.730
conspiracy, mirroring the horror film she loves.

00:06:35.790 –> 00:06:37.329
From the trailer, I think there’s gonna be an

00:06:37.329 –> 00:06:39.189
audience for that, but it’s probably gonna be

00:06:39.189 –> 00:06:41.329
a little more niche. So if you’re into Giallo

00:06:41.329 –> 00:06:44.470
films, apparently it’s still been sort of a found

00:06:44.470 –> 00:06:49.689
footage, VHS, Giallo style, so it looks visually

00:06:49.689 –> 00:06:52.199
kind of interesting. If you’re into Giallo, you

00:06:52.199 –> 00:06:54.779
might be into this. Go check it out. That’ll

00:06:54.779 –> 00:06:57.060
bring us to the end of today’s short placeholder

00:06:57.060 –> 00:06:59.540
episode. For those new here, I invite you to

00:06:59.540 –> 00:07:02.199
come back for future episodes. Next week might

00:07:02.199 –> 00:07:04.399
be a little different as well because Peter will

00:07:04.399 –> 00:07:06.680
be at the Phoenix Film Festival for the premiere

00:07:06.680 –> 00:07:09.360
of our short film, Last Call. And if you live

00:07:09.360 –> 00:07:11.500
near Phoenix, we invite you to come out and see

00:07:11.500 –> 00:07:14.319
it in Shorts Block 1, which is on Friday night

00:07:14.319 –> 00:07:17.300
and Saturday night. You can also check out our

00:07:17.300 –> 00:07:20.470
growing catalog of back episodes. I think we

00:07:20.470 –> 00:07:23.870
are up to episode 11, so there’s 10 you can check

00:07:23.870 –> 00:07:26.430
out. I highly recommend checking out our Origin

00:07:26.430 –> 00:07:29.589
story, which is the first episode, and our interviews

00:07:29.589 –> 00:07:32.930
with guest David Delvall and sound designer Elliot

00:07:32.930 –> 00:07:41.069
Thompson were both great episodes as well. Thanks

00:07:41.069 –> 00:07:43.850
again for tuning in to today’s episode. The show

00:07:43.850 –> 00:07:46.449
notes are available on our website, NightmareLogic

00:07:46.449 –> 00:07:49.379
.net. And feel free to follow us on Instagram

00:07:49.379 –> 00:07:51.720
if you aren’t already, at Nightmare Logic Pod.

00:07:52.439 –> 00:07:55.600
Our theme was scored by the talented Lars Lange

00:07:55.600 –> 00:07:58.579
-Peterson. And if you are a true horror and genre

00:07:58.579 –> 00:08:02.899
fan, tune back in next week and every week. I

00:08:02.899 –> 00:08:04.720
personally would like to dedicate this episode

00:08:04.720 –> 00:08:07.420
to the loving memory of my mother -in -law, Hericlia

00:08:07.420 –> 00:08:09.920
Dusciani, your wonderful mother and grandmother.

00:08:10.519 –> 00:08:13.079
But please don’t come back as a zombie. I’m your

00:08:13.079 –> 00:08:15.259
host, Christopher Smith, joined in spirit by

00:08:15.259 –> 00:08:18.139
Peter Sawyer and Taffeta Darling. Goodbye for

00:08:18.139 –> 00:08:18.399
now.
